Connecticut is one of the country's smallest states in terms of size, covering an area of 5,544 square miles (4 million acres). Of its total landmass, 4,842 square miles (87 percent) of the state is land, while the remaining 701 square miles comprises water. Sandwiched on the commuter belt between New York City and Boston, Connecticut is largely a suburban state that boasts great transit access to the East CoastÂ’s major employment hubs. However, given the stateÂ’s compact size, youÂ’re never far from access to the great outdoors, including Atlantic Ocean beaches, forested trails and rivers, and some 3,000 inland lakes for swimming, fishing and boating. In fact, over half the state is forest habitat, with the stateÂ’s diverse mix of wetlands, forest, fields and coastline (98 miles) providing plentiful habitat to wildlife including wild turkey, bear, shorebirds, beavers and more. Lands of America research shows that 94 percent of land in Connecticut is privately owned.
