Recent internal data lists $1 billion in land and rural property for sale in the Camellia State. This represents 391,483 acres of Alabama land for sale (accounting for roughly one percent of the state's land). The most expensive piece of land listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $38 million, while the median price for land, ranches and farms in Alabama came in at $231,946. The average price of land, ranches and rural property in Alabama was $429,675. There was 3,721 acres of sold land in Alabama recorded last month through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from the previous period. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $9.6 million. Alabama takes full advantage of its plentiful natural assets, with over 1.3 million acres of public hunting lands and some of the country's most liberal hunting seasons and bag limits. Some of the most popular wildlife species to hunt in Alabama include white-tailed deer, wild turkey, mourning doves and rabbits and waterfowl. In terms of its size, Alabama is the country's 30th-largest state, covering an area of 52,423 square miles (34 million acres). Of this area, 50,645 square miles (97 percent) is land, while the remaining 1,775 square miles is covered by water. Less than ten percent of land in Alabama is public land (i.e. national and state parks, national forests, BLM land). As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Alabama. The financial publication Kiplinger has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including property and income taxes, health care and cost of living. The state has also been ranked among the ten best states for the cost of living by U.S. News & World Report. Of Alabama's 67 counties, Randolph County had the most land and rural real estate for sale.
