Based on recent Lands of America data, Virginia ranks sixth in the country for the combined number of properties currently for sale in the state. By overall acreage of land for sale, Virginia ranks 17th. Internal data from Lands of America lists about $9 billion in land and ranches for sale in the Old Dominion. The combined size of land for sale in the state is almost 479,000 acres. Of the 133 counties in Virginia, Franklin County had the most rural property and land for sale. There were 1,108 acres of sold land in Virginia recorded in January through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a rise in sales activity over data from the month before. The most land sales in the state last month were located in Rockbridge and Shenandoah County. Virginia's 40 wildlife management areas total more than 200,000 acres, in addition to the state's other public hunting lands. Big-game species include black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and elk. Over 2,300 miles of wild trout streams beckon anglers in Virginia's Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. WalletHub, a personal finance website, has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including affordability, quality of life and health care. In terms of its size, Virginia is the country's 35th-largest state, covering an area of 42,769 square miles (27 million acres). Of its total landmass, 39,490 square miles of the state is land, while the remaining 3,285 square miles is made up of water. Game species to be found on land for sale in Virginia include whitetail deer, turkey, bear, ducks, and dove. Fishermen can enjoy casting for bass, catfish, trout, pike, and walleye.
