Recent data from Lands of America shows $320 million in farms, ranches and other land for sale in the Coyote State. This represents a total of 132,178 acres of South Dakota land for sale. The most expensive piece of land listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $33 million, while the median price for land for sale in South Dakota came in at $964,544. The average price of land listed for sale in South Dakota was $1 million. There was 20,957 acres of sold land in South Dakota recorded in March 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from the previous period. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $13.4 million. Although 80 percent of land in South Dakota is privately owned, there's still room for over five million acres of state-managed land. The state boasts some of the nation's best pheasant hunting and with annual pheasant harvests regularly topping one million birds each year. In terms of size, South Dakota is the country's 17th-largest state, covering an area of 77,121 square miles (49 million acres). Of this area, 75,811 square miles (98 percent) is made up of land, while the remaining 1,305 square miles comprises water. Approximately 14 percent is considered public land such as national and state parks, national forestland or other federally protected land. As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in South Dakota. The financial publication Kiplinger rated South Dakota as the country's best state for retirement based on factors including property and income taxes, health care, safety and its cost of living. Of the 66 counties in the state, Lawrence County had the most rural property and land for sale.
